Research

The collation and analysis of relevant data and evidence is key to the SGSA’s commitment to being the world’s leading authority on sports grounds safety.

Our research activities include:

• Safe standing and the implementation of licensed standing
• Stewarding, particularly around the challenges in the recruitment and retention in the sector
• Spectator injuries at sports grounds licensed by the SGSA
• Working closely with academics to build on the evidence-base in sports grounds safety
• Other activities, including around neurodiversity.

Safe standing

To support the implementation of licence standing, we have commissioned a number of independent research projects to inform our approach.

Stewarding

We have commissioned research to consider the challenges in stewarding.

Spectator injuries

The SGSA annually collates and publishes a summary of reported injuries at football grounds in England and Wales.

To support this data, we have reviewed how we can improve spectator injury data collection.

Academic engagement

We work closely with academia to support research in sports grounds safety.

We are overseen by a Non-Executive Board, appointed by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
