Evaluation of systematic stewarding challenges

In 2022, the SGSA commissioned research to understand the motivations for becoming a steward and the challenges that stewards (past and present) have in the role.

2CV conducted the research, which was funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS)

This followed research conducted by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) which undertook an assessment of the post-COVID stewarding labour market.

It research identified five overarching motivations that drive people to becoming a steward:

  1. Companionship/connection
  2. Variety of the role
  3. Passion for the sport/event
  4. Terms of employment
  5. Sense of service
