Return of fans announced

The Government has today announced that spectators will be allowed to return to watch elite sport in Tier 1 and 2 areas.  The announcement will come into effect from 2 December.

The number of spectators allowed will depend on the venue.

The Government’s guidance is that the number of spectators that can be safely admitted to the venue will be the lowest of the following …

  • The socially distanced capacity of the ground, as calculated using the SGSA’s SG02: Planning for social distancing at sports grounds guidance.
  • The maximum capacity for the relevant tier (4,000 spectators for Tier 1 areas; 2,000 spectators for Tier 2 areas)
  • 50% of the ground’s normal safe capacity.

To be clear: there is no set capacity for all venues.

The SGSA is on hand to support grounds with the return of spectators.

This is a welcome announcement and we will continue to work with sports governing bodies and local government to ensure the highest safety standards are achieved.
