Honours for SGSA members

Congratulations to the SGSA’s former Chair, Alan Coppin, and current Board member Rimla Akhtar on each receiving an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List this year.

Alan was appointed Chair of the SGSA in April 2015, and continued in the role until his term of office ended on 31 March 2021.  Alan has been a steadfast supporter and advocate of the SGSA since he started as Chair in 2015. He has represented the organisation at countless meetings with Ministers, DCMS leaders and our many stakeholders. In addition, he is a committed fundraiser and takes part in numerous charitable activities each year.  Over the years his personal fundraising activities have raised over £300,000.

Alan said: “The OBE, for services to safety in sport, is in reality a tribute to the incredible achievements of the Sports Grounds Safety Authority, which I had the privilege to chair.

“The SGSA has undoubtedly become a world leader in the last six years despite being one of the smallest public bodies in the UK, with the tiniest of budgets. Its success is an organisational one due to the expertise, hard work, commitment and consequential high performance of the SGSA’s impressive staff and board team. It is with this understanding that I was pleased to accept the honour.”

Rimla received the OBE for services to equality and diversity in sport, following receipt of a MBE in 2015.  Rimla has over 20 years’ experience in the sports industry across the UK, Middle East and Asia.  She holds a portfolio of strategic and boardroom roles, including as an Independent Non-Executive Director of both the Rugby Football League as well as the Sports Grounds Safety Authority.
